Release:
January 10, 2002HIPAA
Security Seminar:
infotex,
an affiliate of Bucheri McCarty & Metz LLP in Kokomo,
Lafayette, and Wabash, will be conducting a free seminar to review the
Security Ruling for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996 (HIPAA) issued by the Department of Health and Human
Services. These regulations are meant to increase efficiencies and
patient privacy in the healthcare industry.
“This
Act applies to any entity storing patient information in electronic
format. Even though
healthcare entities will have two or three years to comply, depending on
their size, it will take all of that time to get into
compliance,”
said
Dan Hadaway, COO of
infotex.
“HIPAA will require a Security Assessment to check for
compliance of the Security Standards. Because we already offer this service, we can help our
clients and others understand the implications of the Security
Ruling.”
The
seminar will focus on the Information Security portion of the
ruling, covering policy, procedural and technical issues.
“All offices will need to develop a plan to comply with
these regulations,” Hadaway said.
“The regulations extend beyond healthcare providers to
include insurance companies, dental practices, chiropractics,
optometrists . . . any entity that stores personally identifiable
health information in an electronic format.”
"The
proposed Rule was first published on August 12, 1998 by the
Department of Health and Human Services," said Julie Tracy MCP
iNet+, Information Architect at
infotex,
who has been studying the regulations.
"We expect that the final ruling will be very close to
the original proposal. Regardless
of what the final ruling includes, we can bank on a certain number
of ‘best practices’ to be included in that ruling.”
The
seminar is scheduled for January 23rd in Kokomo and
February 6th in Lafayette.
