Release:
February 24th, 2003
HIPAA Entered into Federal Register:
Infotex, Inc., an Information Technology firm in Kokomo, Lafayette, and
Wabash, has learned that the Health and Human Services Department’s
final standards for protecting the security of health-care information
within electronic transactions were entered into the Federal Register on
February 20th. It is the Final Security Ruling for the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
“These standards require health-care organizations to develop, document,
and implement the steps they take to secure health-care information,”
says Matt Jonkman, CISSP of Infotex. “The standards also establish
baseline safeguards for
health-care organizations.” These organizations must deploy
administrative measures such as security training and security
assessments, physical security measures, and technological
safeguards.
Julie Tracy, an
Information Architect at Infotex, explained, “The regulations extend
beyond health-care providers to include insurance companies, dental
practices, chiropractics, optometrists and any entity that stores
protected health information in electronic format.”
“The good news
for health-care providers is that we already offer services to our
clients that put them a step ahead of the regulations,” stated Tracy.
“Our Information Security Assessment and Gap Analysis defines where
you are now in relation to where you need to be in order to comply
with the new Security Ruling.”
Infotex now offers services to Kansas, Missouri, and Indiana clients.
“The nice thing about Information Security is that it really has no
boundaries,” says Jonkman. “We can conduct assessments for healthcare
organizations throughout the world.”
