Infotex Supports Indiana Information Security Week

Indiana Information Security Week (April 7-13) was created by Purdue University’s CERIAS, with the support of technology partners, to bring attention to the problems associated with information security. Activities and programs are designed to enhance the security literacy and skills of Indiana businesses, organizations, and citizens.

The Indiana Information Security Week initiative and awareness campaign will kick off with an Information Security Symposium at Purdue University April 7, 8, and 9. The symposium portion (Tuesday and Wednesday) is free and offers opportunities to learn more about research in areas related to information assurance and security and will focus discussions on issues of privacy, protection of intellectual and proprietary property, wireless business, and intrusion detection.

In support of Information Security Week, Infotex, Inc. and CERIAS will also make several presentations related to Information Security available to local PTAs and other parenting organizations.

CERIAS - Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and SecurityPurdue University“Information Security is not just a business process issue,” says Dan Hadaway, President of the firm. “Home computers can be targeted for a variety of malicious activities ranging from identity theft to virus attacks to vandalism. With these talks, we hope to help parents understand Information Security issues in the home.”

In addition, Infotex and Purdue University's CERIAS are partnering on a program aimed at 1) securing K-12 information systems and 2) educating K-12 students about Information Security.

“Not only do we want to increase the awareness and practice of information security,” says Matthew Jonkman, CISSP, who is heading the program, “we also want to help students recognize the ethics of information security. We want to encourage the notion that it’s no longer cool to hack into a system.” “We believe the best way to improve Information Security is to increase its value,” says Hadaway. “This can only be accomplished by education.”
